GERALD SUPPORTS CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE
WITH ADDITIONAL POWERS

Picture
Hello, my name is Gerald the Giraffe, and I am here to support Children and Young People who additional powers, or as society has labelled them, who have additional needs. This Idea came about after the birth of my Children, one of which had a condition known as TOF OA (Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula with Oesophageal Atresia) which is the inability to swallow due to the Oesophagus not forming correctly in the womb. This meant that corrective surgery was required to enable him to eat orally. This is an ongoing condition that requires monitoring. We then also discovered that he was born with no Auditory Nerves, which would also mean that he was unable to hear and unable to be implanted with hearing aids or Concealers. This led to our family having to access sign language. One of the reasons that Gerald the Giraffe was established was because over the years it has become apparent that other people are, through no fault of their own, unaware if a child has a hidden disability. In the case of hearing loss this can be because of an absence of a hearing aid. This has led to countless situations when out in public of me having to explain why he wasn’t responding to people. People would then apologise and move on, not attempting to communicate with him at all. These children and young people with additional powers are expected to fit into societies idea of how we should all act and behave as well as dealing with their additional requirements. Therefore, instead of describing people with additional needs Gerald acknowledges that they have additional powers. These powers are often hidden but mean that these children, young people and their familes must adapt to manage their particular requirements.
With the help and support of Gerald the Giraffe there is a chance for these children and young people to allow the public the opportunity to understand their Additional Powers and maybe assist them in whatever activity they are doing, not by necessarily giving physical help but by being more understanding and patient in the knowledge that they may react and behave in a way that has become to be known as ‘socially unacceptable’ or ‘rude’. All children with hidden disabilities and their families have always adapted to social situations to stop others from feeling awkward or embarrassed but now there is opportunity for the public to acknowledge and accept people for who they are and embrace their additional powers and recognise what these young people can teach them, without them having to give an explanation initially. Lets all embrace our additional powers. •	Autism •	Hearing Loss •	Sight loss •	Epilepsy •	Diabetes •	ADHD •	TOF Children •	Brain Injuries •	Cystic fibrosis •	MS •	Downs Syndrome •	and many more!
